www.foodisfree.com.auFood Is Free Inc. is a grassroots, community-led not-for-profit benefitting all Ballarat citizens focusing on those experiencing disadvantage with a core purpose of assisting food security, plus community cohesion/inclusion. Operating over two sites: Food Is Free Laneway (est. 2014) and Food Is Free Green Space (2018), both within a short walk of each other. Food Is Free Laneway helps people solve their food waste issues, whilst assisting those food insecure within our community. Visitors wander through the Laneway to access free fresh food (fruit, veg & herbs) donated from Green Space plus local gardens 24/7 with anonymity and no questions asked/no paperwork to fill out. Food Is Free delivers a vital educational element with signage on how to grow your own food, plus free seeds & seedlings for persons to take with them to start their own garden for empowerment and self-sufficiency. Food Is Free Green Space’s purpose-built outdoor classroom with over 30 garden beds aimed at risk/marginalised persons, helps them grow food whilst learn gardening skills. General public workshops are also hosted in the space. Both sites enjoy up to 100 daily visitors during peak times and are a very much loved and embraced part of Ballarat's community.
