Mount Ophir Estate

Mount Ophir Estate, a unique and exclusive property in the rural district of Rutherglen in northern Victoria, Australia. Boasting 360-degree views of the surrounding area, including the Murray River Basin and the Snowy Mountains to the east. Mount Ophir Estate was established in 1891 by Eisemann and Gleeson as a farm and vineyard. The Burgoyne family the owners of Mount Ophir Estate from 1903 were prominent London wine merchants, who developed the property further by constructing a French provincial tower (a nod to their heritage) and a winemaking facility. At this time, the building was the largest state-of-the-art wine producing complex in the Southern Hemisphere. Their ultimate vision was to be the wine centre of Australia. The property initially boasted 740 acres of vines and approximately twenty houses to accommodate the management and staff; it also had a football and cricket team which regularly won the local Rutherglen competitions. The wine bore the royal seal of England and was transported via rail to port and then via steamships to ‘the mother country’ to satisfy the palate of British aristocracy. The winery closed in 1955, and the 740-acre estate reduced to 140 acres. Mount Ophir Estate is currently operating as an exclusive site for private events, including Rutherglen weddings, corporate getaways, and unique, luxury accommodation. We are also a spectacular location for your next photo or film shoot. Mount Ophir Estate’s philosophy is to be gentle on the environment and look after the earth. Sustainable farm management is used on established plantings of low yielding and high-quality vineyard on fine clay loam of Shiraz, Durif (a famous regional variety) and Brown Muscat. Sheep, geese, guinea fowl, and peacocks roam the beautiful estate in a serene environment.
