Huntingtons Disease Association Tasmania

www.huntingtonstasmania.org.au

Huntington’s Disease is an inherited degenerative neurological condition affecting the brain and central nervous system that results in the progressive loss of mental and physical capacities. The HTT gene is common to all human DNA, however; only those who inherit the expansion of the gene will develop Huntington’s Disease. Every child of an HD parent has a 50/50 risk of inheriting the expanded HTT gene and go on to develop the disease. Huntington’s Disease progressively strips away the affected individual’s ability to walk, talk, eat, think and reason; death ensues from complications. The Association aims to assist families in coping with and understanding of the disease, all while helping these families develop a strong unified voice in the quest for quality services, dignity and respect. Whether you have the disease yourself, are the partner of the affected party, a family member or friend or you are caring for someone whether they be HD, gene-positive or at risk of inheriting HD, we can provide support, information and direction on where to go to seek help and professional care. You are not alone!
