The Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute (HWNI) at UC Berkeley is the nexus for campus-wide multidisciplinary neuroscience research and The Berkeley BRAIN Initiative. HWNI is a collaborative research community of 51 faculty members in 12 academic departments, with plans to increase membership to over 65 in the next five years. HWNI supports its faculty through leading-edge technology centers and research initiatives, and runs the Neuroscience Ph.D. Program. Using approaches from many disciplines (including biophysics, chemistry, cognitive sciences, computer science, genetics, mathematics, molecular and cell biology, and physiology), we seek to understand how the brain generates behavior and cognition, and to better understand, diagnose, and treat neurological diseases.
