Youth Initiatives Kenya (YIKE)
www.yike.orgYouth Initiatives-Kenya (YIKE) envisions a future where youth are able to facilitate their own development. YIKE encourages and strengthens collective social, economic, cultural, environmental and technological initiatives developed by youth in urban informal settlements and rural areas around Nairobi. YIKE strives to remove obstacles to youth empowerment so that they have sustainable livelihoods and successful lives. A non-profit organization registered in July 2003 at the Kenyan Non Governmental Organization (NGO) bureau. YIKE began as an initiative to develop capacity of self-forming youth groups so that they could play a greater role in the development of their own communities. From observation and experience it was realized that youth groups based in slums, have potential that is only limited by their socio-economic environment. By providing basic training, resources and mentorship, these youth do indeed prosper. YIKE aims to assist marginalized and disenfranchised youth, to help them create and sustain income generating, lead a healthy life, access the benefits of ICT and have a better understanding of their rights as citizens.
