Action for Refugees in Lewisham (AFRIL)

www.afril.org.uk

We are a small locally run charity based in Lewisham, one of the most deprived local authority areas in England, with a very high refugee and asylum seeker population. We work to relieve poverty and isolation amongst this vulnerable group, advance their education, and provide services to improve social integration. Since our creation in 2006, we continue to help an average of 120 people in our local community each week - with education, family support services, and access to emergency supplies. It is our mission to help refugees help themselves by: 1. Empowering them to acquire skills and knowledge. 2. Finding out about and accessing services. 3. Providing volunteer experience to build their skills. As part of our service, we offer the following guarantee: 1. We treat all information provided as strictly confidential. 2. We strive to deliver a service that recognised equal opportunities for all. 3. We empower users to get involved in the planning and delivery of our services. In 2015 we continue to provide: - English as a second language (ESOL) classes for adults on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays provided by our partner Community Education Lewisham (CEL), with a creche for children aged 1 to 4 years old. - A supplementary School for children - the Rainbow Club, aged 4-11 years old. - Support destitute families with clothes, food and other essentials. - Sunday Tea: At St Margaret's Church, Lee Terrace one Sunday per Month.
