Operating since 1962, the agency serves youth ages 6-18 in two core programs: Community-Based Mentoring: traditional one-to-one mentoring during mentor/mentee free time, roughly 9 hours/month. Site-Based Mentoring: one-to-one mentoring that takes place once a week for 1 hour at a school or an after school program. Big Brothers Big Sisters is accountable for each child enrolled as a Little increasing academic achievement, improving social skills, and creating a healthy lifestyle. Demographics of youth served: 71% of Littles live with a single mom 21% of Littles have an incarcerated parent 41% of Littles have household income below $25,000 76% of Littles are African American 64% of Littles are Middle School students 34% of Littles are male Local Outcomes: 100% of Littles feel they have an adult they can turn to in a time of need 96% of Littles are less likely to skip school 20% of Littles are more likely to finish high school; educational outcomes also increase for attending college and graduating college 98% of Littles understand the negative repercussions of alcohol, drugs, and violence 66% of Littles feel more accepted by their peers Big Brothers Big Sisters is entirely donor supported and volunteer driven. There is never a charge for our services. Each year Big Brothers Big Sisters must raise at least $1 million in our local area to serve roughly 600 children.
