Peter is the fifth generation of the Overvoorde family in horticulture and started a young plant commercial propagation business in 1976. Peter has seen the business through its growth from a fledgling company to its current position as a leader within the industry. Peter now manages 44-acres across two sites which includes East End Nurseries Ltd. His son, Will, has now joined the business to follow in his father’s footsteps and is the sixth generation of the family in horticulture. In 2002, Peter decided to move away from intensive tomato production to intensive commercial strawberry production. The East End Nurseries Ltd site consists of 36,000 m2 of heated glasshouse (nine acres) and 8,000 m2 (two acres) of Spanish polytunnels, producing 280 tonnes per year of glasshouse strawberries and 20 tonnes per year of outdoor tunnel grown strawberries. East End Nurseries Ltd has been a supplier of top quality strawberries to M&S for over 10 years. East End Nurseries Ltd now directly employs 45 members of staff on a seasonal and permanent basis. The main variety grown is Malling Centenary and fruit is packed on site at East End Nurseries Ltd. The management team ensure the site adheres to all the supermarkets food quality, safety and ethical standards (Red tractor, BRC etc.) and it has a fantastic record of compliance. At the M&S Select Farm Awards in 2019, East End Nurseries Ltd were honoured as Regional Runner Up in the Innovation Award category, for adopting new technology and renewable energy to help improve the performance of the business.
