English for Action London
www.efalondon.orgEFA London is an independent registered charity (no. 1133268) which started its activities in 2006. The charity provides free, community-based English courses for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and their families in London. We work in partnership with local organisations to run courses in venues which are accessible and at the heart of the communities where we work, such as local community centres, faith institutions and schools. Our courses are a place where people are valued, listened to, supported and have an active involvement in the contents of their classes. Our pedagogy is inspired by Paulo Freire and the work of Action Aid's Reflect ESOL Project. We see education as a tool for social change: learners are encouraged to share their experiences with the group, and critical thinking and dialogue are valued. We also provide volunteering opportunities for local people to develop their knowledge and skills and strengthen links between communities. T he courses cover more than English language: they offer training and advice relating to everyday difficulties faced by members of London's non-English speaking communities. We believe that improved language skills enable migrants to put more into, and get more out of, life in London. EFA London exists to equip people to affect positive change in their homes, communities and workplaces.
