Mittens for Detroit

www.mittensfordetroit.org

Mittens for Detroit, founded in 2010, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that collects, purchases and distributes new, unused mittens and gloves for children, teens, and adults in need in Detroit, Michigan, and other nearby underserved cities. Nearly 100 Detroit-based charities, schools and organizations distribute these pairs to their families, clients, students, and more. Mittens for Detroit has collected and distributed more than one-quarter million pairs to date. Active collection of new, unused mittens and gloves occurs October 1st - January 10th. In those four months, hundreds of collection boxes are around Metro Detroit, where people in the community drop their donations. Also, many corporations, clubs, service groups, and individuals hold MittenRaisers to benefit Mittens for Detroit. Financial donations are tax deductible. Volunteers assist in counting, sorting and packing the incoming collections, readying the pairs for pick up by our Distribution Partners. This fun volunteer activity is called The Big Sort.
