Why Should You ? Mental ill health costs UK employers an estimated £34.9 billion each year ! The improve the management of mental health in the workplace will allow employers to save 30% or more of these costs - at least £8 billion a year. The annual figure is broken down as follows: £10.6 billion in sickness absence; £21.2 billion in reduced productivity at work, or ‘presenteeism’ and £3.1 billion in replacing staff who leave their jobs because of their mental health. The HSE says: “You should consider ways to manage mental ill health in your workplace which are appropriate for your business, such as providing information or training for managers and employees, employing occupational health professionals, appointing mental health trained first aiders and implementing employee support programmes.” Well-being is good for business. Healthy people are happier, more engaged and productive at work, therefore, you should consider this training as an essential provision for your senior managers and employees. Legislation for Mental Health First Aid provision in the workplace is not yet in place, however, it is expected to be a top priority for Parliament (see the Government’s Thriving at Work report setting out the core standards for a healthy workplace); and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have already published guidance on Mental Ill Health and First Aid and more recently have been promoting incorporating Mental Health in to risk management practices https://www.hse.gov.uk/stress/mental-health.htm.
