The store was originally founded in 1959 based on the aspirations of Robert Lesczinski, an avid sign painter. Robert started the business with his brother Ed and sister, Mary to help fulfill the niche of art supplies in Rochester. In 1977, John and Mike Lesczinski took over the family business and truly put the store on the map for fine art supplies. In an attempt to make the store an international hub for professional art supplies, Mike introduced many new materials and specialty lines.
