The cultural centre showcases one of Australia's most significant permanent Japanese art collections, along with visiting exhibitions. The garden was established to recognise and develop the relationship between the people of Cowra Shire and Japan, a relationship that has its origins in the Prisoner of War Camp that housed Japanese POW’s during World War II. The garden, a strolling garden in the style of the Edo period, was designed by world renowned architect Ken Nakajima. The traditional buildings were designed by architects Takeo Adachi and Tatsushi Aono. The garden, buildings, and cultural collection have been made possible through generous donations from individuals and companies of Australia, Japan, and the world.
