Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) is a national non-profit, volunteer-based organization committed to relieving loneliness and isolation among the elderly. We offer to people of good will the opportunity to join the elderly in friendship and celebration of life. Our motto "Flowers before bread" expresses our belief that love and dignity and beauty in life are as essential as physical needs. At LBFE, service begins by being a friend. We currently have independent chapters in five US locations: Chicago, Boston, Cincinnati, San Francisco and Upper Michigan. New York City is currently an expansion site based in Brooklyn. The LBFE New York expansion site launched in November 2016 with our first holiday event. Our visiting volunteers delivered 20 Thanksgiving care packages then, including a meal, flowers and handwritten cards, to 20 homebound elderly New Yorkers. Thanks to the support and generosity of countless volunteers, donors, and community partners, we have made over 4,000 in-person visits and 6,000 friendly phone calls to our older friends, breaking the cycle of elder isolation through the power of friendship. We are also providing referrals and resources to elders and caregivers in need of additional support. Thanks to people of good will, we aim to build lifetime friendships with isolated elders in NYC and make a commitment to offer our services for the remainder of their lifetime. By showing our elder friends they are remembered, seen, listened to and cared for, we bring much happiness and comfort in their later years. Our friendly visiting programs also promote inter-generational friendships. It gives our volunteers opportunities to celebrate the lives of our elders, to learn from them and to develop priceless friendships over time.
