Kiwanis Doernbecher Childrens Cancer Program
www.kiwanisdoernbecher.orgWe envision a world without childhood cancer, so, we fund the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at OHSU/ Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. The Fellowship provides the training the Fellows need to transition from pediatricians to pediatric physician scientists. Their careers will be dedicated to treating new patients, conducting research, running clinical trials, developing new therapies and training other doctors. That is impact. We find it unacceptable that cancer kills more children in the US than all other diseases combined. The Fellowship at Doernbecher gives us reason to hope for something much better. We are convinced that the way to end children’s cancer is to bring more skilled physician scientists into the fight. Long term survival of children’s cancer is improving from 20% thirty years ago to 80% today but even within that 80% children still have to suffer through chemotherapy and hospital stays that diminish their childhoods. The ultimate goal is to end children’s cancer forever through prevention, and that’s why we need to keep training physician scientists.
