SPPF: M.A.S.T.R. Kids Program

www.sppfoundation.com

The Shirley Proctor Puller organization is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization committed to advancing literacy and helping to close the achievement gap among underserved children in the community of South St. Petersburg. This area is recognized by the county as "at-risk Zone 5" due to the number of people living below the poverty line. It also has the highest concentration of falling elementary schools in the state of Florida. Our M.A.S.T.R. Kids Summer Program is a very low cost way for parents to provide their children with the academic enrichment they need to avoid summer learning loss and in many cases to stimulate summer learning gains. The program provides a heavy dose of literacy a well as STEAM based curriculum. We've operated the program for three summers now and the results are very promising. I strongly believe that we will need an ecosystem, including the schools, not-for-profits, parents/families and students, that works together in order to transform the performance outcomes of the children in South St. Pete, Lealman and other "at-risk" communities in Pinellas County. I'm starting to build that ecosystem.
