The organization is a classified 501(c)(3) non-profit and is run by a volunteer board of directors. The franchise was established in late 2001, with its inaugural season in June of 2002. Since then, the Mainers have brought more than 17 years of quality baseball, becoming Southern Maine's premier baseball experience. Though the months of June, July and early August, the Mainers compete through a 44-game schedule with the goal of landing a spot in the pursuit of the league's Fay Vincent Cup - a feat the organization has captured twice (2004 & 2008) in its history. Sanford has seen seven former players make their Major League debut, with more than 80 other players hearing their name called during the MLB draft. Currently, the Mainers have two former players active in Major League Baseball - Tampa Bay Rays second baseman, Joey Wendle and Atlanta Braves outfielder, Adam Duvall. The Mainers organization strives for the strength and development of skills not only for the several collegiate players that come from all parts of the country, but through its volunteer base and vast internship program. In 2018, the Mainers were recognized as the Community Service Organization of the Year by the Sanford/Springvale Chamber of Commerce, with additional recognition by United States Senator of Maine, Susan Collins.
