Cultural Leadership

www.culturalleadership.org

Cultural Leadership is a nonprofit youth educational leadership development organization that exists to create a more just and equitable community by educating middle school and high school students and their parents in the St. Louis region about social justice issues and how to solve them in their communities, workplaces and schools. Cultural Leadership's mission is to give students and their parents the tools and skills necessary to become social justice activists and create a world of inclusion, opportunity, and equality for all. Our motto is that when the young people see a problem, they are to grab an ally or two or three, roll up their sleeves, and get to work to create a world of inclusion and equality. Established in 2004, Cultural Leadership was modeled after Operation Understanding DC, which was established in Washington DC in 1994 and is still a vital organization today. Both programs successfully demonstrate the value of instilling young people with a passion for social justice and preparing them to organize and lead others to Stand up, Speak out, and Take action against injustice and discrimination of all kinds. During the year-long program for high school students, participants attend monthly meetings, three weekend retreats, and a three-week transformational summer journey, for a total of 460 program hours. Students meet local and national leaders who are working to solve issues of social injustice; they spend a day in an under-performing high school to witness the inequalities in education, and travel to places in the United States that are significant to civil rights, social justice and democracy. They must complete a social justice project before graduating. In 2014 we will launch Camp Cultural Leadership. A two-week summer day camp for middle school students that will include a two day overnight trip to Memphis, TN. The program will focus on leadership skills, increasing cultural awareness and reinforcing social justice concepts.
