Holderness School is an independent boarding and day school for grades 9-12. Its mission – pro deo et genere humano--is at the heart of its community. Translated as “For God and Humankind,” the mission guides the school’s Episcopal chapel program, its service program, and its community life. Holderness community members are avid outdoorspeople, spending as much time as possible learning, competing, and having fun outdoors. Courses are not only often conducted outside, but academic curricula--particularly STEM components--are frequently connected to the lakes and forests that surround the school. Holderness School’s 275 students participate in three sports a year including rock climbing, mountain biking, as well as traditional school sports like football, lacrosse, golf, tennis, and field and ice hockey. Half of our student body is comprised of alpine, Nordic and freeski snow sports athletes--many are ranked at the national or international level. The school is located minutes from three of the best ski mountains in the East, has a lighted running and Nordic trail network and an outdoor ice rink The school's Job Program drives a four-year leadership program that includes students working with maintenance, kitchen, and housekeeping staff to care for the school’s grounds and services. This shared work underpins a kindness and empathy that powers the community. The combination of the school’s focus on community and character and its joyful outdoor spirit are what make it distinctive: Holderness offers a first class preparatory education, a first class snow sports program and develops the mind, body and spirit in order to nurture graduates who are educated, resilient, and open-minded citizens with the skills for a happy and successful life.
