Irregular heartbeats, or cardiac arrhythmias, impact nearly 5 million Americans per year, and are the leading cause of Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD). SCD is the most prolific natural killer in the United States, claiming approximately 325,000 lives per year. Current solutions are all focused on the TREATMENT of arrhythmias after they form rather than PREVENTION, and have noted downsides: - clinical risk and high failure rate (ablation) - painful shocks (ICDs) - limitations on the severity of arrhythmia treatable (pacemakers and medication). Rhythio Medical is developing the first preventative solution to arrhythmias – to eliminate potential problems before they form, and before they need treatment. This works because heart rhythm is controlled by electrical signals traveling through the heart, and heart damage can act as a physical barrier to this conduction, causing an arrhythmia. Our technology uses an injectable electrode, or "liquid wire" to create artificial bypasses around this damage, to reduce the risk of an arrhythmia forming. We believe this is a platform technology, with potential applications across the entire cardiac rhythm space.
