Rafiki Beads is a social enterprise that aims to improve the lives of underprivileged women in the Maasai tribe of Kenya. In this region, women suffer from extreme gender inequality and do not have the ability to stand up against the traditions of oppression. Without the educational means or financial independence to improve their circumstances, these women are forced into a subjective lifestyle against their will. Most women endure the excruciating experience of female genital mutilation and are forced into arranged marriages, thus continuing the cycle of female oppression. Amongst their limited set of skills, these women have achieved exceptional craftsmanship with their jewelry. The Maasai women have mastered this trade because it is tradition to learn at a young age. Our mission at Rafiki Beads is to be a vehicle for change. We are providing a portal for these women to sell their jewelry in a market that they otherwise would not have access to. This creates a system where women can provide for their families without being dependent on others and achieving economic empowerment.
