Although our offices are in Cape Town, we operate throughout South Africa, serving individuals, families, small businesses and corporate groups. Medical aid can be complicated, but we try our best to simplify a complex and highly regulated environment and make sure that our members have effective medical cover, and all the information they need to make informed healthcare choices at every stage of their lives. We’re a mutual society established by its members and for its members to help defray the cost of medically-necessary healthcare. To this day, our members own the scheme and all its funds. We all share a common goal, and understand our responsibilities toward the scheme and fellow members. We perform all our functions in-house, and our daily operations are overseen by a member-elected Board of Trustees. We have no corporate infrastructures, and no extensive budgets for non-healthcare expenses. In fact, while most schemes in South Africa build the cost of administration into their members' fees, 98% – 99% of our members' fees are paid out as benefits. What remains is put into our reserves – the interest from that is used to keep the scheme running.
