Professional disciplines bound by the common theme of rendering service to individuals, families and communities to meet some of their most fundamental human needs characterize the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Lamar University. Undergraduate and graduate students develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for careers in service to children and families, nutrition, hospitality, interior design, fashion, and teacher certification. The Department equips students to work toward the elevation of well-being at the personal, community and global levels of interaction, addressing issues from a family perspective as well as a consumer one. Faculty members engage students in activities that build social capital locally and that foster students’ own professional growth, including research and internship opportunities. Emphasis is placed upon quality teaching within a student-centered environment that is responsive to the learner’s needs. Students are prepared to earn state and/or national licensure in their chosen professions, where applicable, and develop appreciation for lifelong learning and a positive awareness of diversity in the global community.
