Po Ya College, Tunghai University - Liberal Arts Education

Since its foundation in 1955, Tunghai University has aimed towards an ideal of liberal arts education, emphasizing close faculty-student relationships, encouraging freedom of thought, advocating the integration of knowledge and practice–guided by four principles of education: service to the community, a broad-based education, small class sizes, and residential learning. The establishment of the Po-Ya School strives to revitalize this spirit of innovation. Every part of the Po-Ya Program is centered on the humanistic ideals of character-building, development of the whole individual, and a commitment to the integration of theory and practice. The program aims to provide broad-based learning exposure to life skills in order to complement and enhance the professional education offered in each specialist department without conflicting requirements. Most importantly, we only accepted around 100 people per academic year. In addition to the regular university-wide freshmen labor education program, Po-Ya School students participate in a wide range of community service learning programs in their sophomore year. Moreover, the Po-Ya School program includes: guest lectures, focused general education curricula on Western and Eastern culture and thought, discussion-based coursework on contemporary global issues, coursework relating to the classical Chinese concept of the “6 Arts”, project-based learning, experiential and outdoor-leadership learning. Over the 4-years of the Po-Ya School program, students are expected to develop a sense of personal and professional ethics with a moral guiding compass, a sense of personal vocation, a relevant life skills-set, and a sense of compassion for others.
