Hervey Bay City Council (HBCC) established Wide Bay Water Corporation (WBWC) on 1 January 2002 as a local government owned corporation in accordance with the provisions of the (now repealed) Local Government Act 1993 (Qld). In 2012, Fraser Coast Regional Council (Council) undertook a Public Benefit Assessment (PBA) in relation to WBWC, a wholly owned entity. As a result of the PBA, Council resolved to change the current model of delivery of services provided through WBWC. Commencing on 1 July 2016, Council now undertakes delivery of services previously undertaken by WBWC through Wide Bay Water, a commercialised business unit of Council. from the period from January 2002 until June 2016, WBWC provided safe, reliable and efficient water and wastewater services to residents, commerce and industry on the Fraser Coast of Queensland – and professional consultancy services to clients across Australia and internationally. Catering to a population of approximately 100,000 its service area included the fast growing cities of Hervey Bay and Maryborough - and the communities of Tiaro, Woocoo, Aldershot, Torbanlea, Howard, Toogoom and Burrum Heads. Wide Bay Water Corporation owned and operates an advanced water infrastructure network comprising two dams, four water treatment plants, eight wastewater treatment plants, a unique recreational water park and an industry leading wastewater re-use scheme irrigating local cane fields and hardwood plantations.
