In the fall semester of 2002, there were 422 students within the Haas Undergraduate Program at University of California, Berkeley. A mere 6 were African Americans/Black—less than 1.5%. Because of these discouraging numbers, Melanie Boughton, Karibu Nyaggah, and Solomon Asfaw had a dream to establish an organization that would help minority students with their pursuits of getting into Haas. The purpose of the organization was to increase the number of African American/Black students within Haas and assist students in their professional development pursuits. Haas Undergraduate Black Business Association (HUBBA) was officially founded in February of 2003 with the help of student advocate Mrs. H. Faye Lawson. Today, HUBBA is the premier professional development organization representing the Black community at University of California, Berkeley. Our mission is to support African American/Black students and other underrepresented groups with their business affiliated aspirations through professional exposure, professional development opportunities, and community involvement.
