Les Enfants du Noma
www.enfantsdunoma.infoLes Enfants Du Noma (EDN) is a non-profit association, governed by French law. This humanitarian organization is active in major rescue for people with noma and / or mutilations and deformities. Dr. Costini and Dr. Bellity, specialists in plastic surgery, reconstructive and aesthetic have been working for several years as volunteers. Touched by the plight of these children few people are interested in, and which can not be operated locally (only a few, supported by Swiss NGOs, were sent to Europe for surgery), both surgeons decided to create their own NGO and, armed with their strong contacts in Burkina Faso, embarked on this adventure with the generous purpose of giving faces to those who have none. Since 2001, together with fellow colleagues surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses, they have operated hundreds of children, giving their time and their hearts. To date, more than a thousand children have been operated. The association was first developed in Burkina Faso, then in Mali and recently in Benin. These countries had, before 2002, no infrastructure to intervene surgically : no trained surgeons or suitable equipment. Since it has been found, EDN has achieved certain goals set at the creation of the association: • Operating safely and cost-efficiently patients suffering from the after-effects of noma or other face diseases. • Participating in the training of surgeons in these countries to lead them towards autonomy. • Providing equipment for the hospital premises. • Helping to promote awareness of this disease and the ways to prevent it. But there remains so much to be done!
