Webgyrlz Code
www.webgyrlzcode.orgWebgyrlz Code is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides training to girls in grades 3-6 to teach them how to code a web page using HTML5. Webgyrlz Code is the 2014 winner of the EngenuitySC Ignite! Ideas contest. Our mission is to teach girls not only to code and to take an interest in STEM based careers, but also help them obtain life skills that will make them successful no matter what career they choose to pursue. Classes are taught at various locations throughout the Midlands of South Carolina. We desire to partner with school districts, home school programs, and community groups to teach girls in a classroom setting about HTML coding. They learn how to develop their own one page website, hand coding the entire website. Currently, in America less than 10% of the top programming languages employ females. Our goal is to change that by bridging the gap that exists in computer sciences and females pursuing careers in this field. We want to teach girls, before peer pressure sets in, that coding is fun and can become a real part of their educational experience and life.
