ratiopharm ulm is the sporting figurehead of an entire region. The club from cathedral city Ulm, founded in 2001, has been playing in the top German division easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) continuously since 2006. The first big success came in the 2011/12 season with the German runner-up, in 2013 and 2014 they made it to the cup final twice. After ratiopharm ulm under head coach Thorsten Leibenath brought the second German runner-up to the Danube in 2016, captain and identification figure Per Günther was voted the most popular player in the Basketball Bundesliga for the fifth time in a row. Günther played exclusively for ratiopharm ulm in his career and played over 400 BBL games. The 2016/17 season turned out to be record-breaking: ratiopharm ulm trumped Bayer Leverkusen's 47-year-old record with 27 Bundesliga victories in a row. The move into the ratiopharm arena in December 2011 also marked the beginning of the most successful period in club history: Eleven play-offs in the Bundesliga and eight in the EuroCup are proof of this. Since the 2019/20 season the Ulm team is coached by the former Slovenian national player and EuroLeague champion Jaka Lakovic. Most recently ratiopharm ulm gained its greatest success on international stage under head coach Jaka Lakovic as the team won against the odds-on favourite and reached the EuroCup quarter finals 2021/22. With the opening of the OrangeCampus in summer 2020, the club reached its next milestone. BBU ‘01, the club behind the professional team ratiopharm ulm, is already home to the second most active basketball players in Germany. With the move to the OrangeCampus, this number has been increased to 1,000 player licenses. To this end, the club invested 23 million euros in the youth training center.
