The Leonhardt Group was founded in 1985 and grew to $10 million in sales and a staff of over 40 in 1999. The Leonhardt Group had national and international clients and specialized in branding, naming and corporate communications. Clients included, Nissan, Charles Schwab, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Federated Department Stores, Nordstrom, Boeing, and Apple. Notably, the company named and created the original packaging for the morning after pill. The company was sold by Ted and Carolyn Leonhardt to a group of investors in Chicago named Lighthouse in 1999. Lighthouse in turn sold Leonhardt along with Primo Angeli and Fitch to Cordiant Communications Group in 2000. Ted Leonhardt was hired by Cordiant in 2000 as Chief Creative officer of the company's branding and design services which included 27 offices around the world. Those offices were rebranded with the Fitch name in 2001 and The Leonhardt Group became Leonhardt Fitch. Cordiant and all of it's holdings, including Leonhardt Fitch were acquired by WPP in 2002.
