Unfortunately, some 35 years later in 1780, Langdale's distillery was burned to the ground and totally destroyed by rioters, during the "Lord Gordon Riots". Led by Cosmo George, Duke of Gordon, a mob of 10,000 people swept through the City of London in an orgy of destruction. The annual register of 1780 gives a vivid description of the mob fighting in the streets to obtain the potent spirits of wines used to make the Essence. So moved by the event was Charles Dickens that he gave a graphic account of the destruction of the distillery in "Barnaby Rudge". Happily Edward Langdale was able to rebuild his distillery and continue producing Essence of Cinnamon, which became ever more popular. It was later in the 19th century that Langdale's Essence of Cinnamon achieved widespread fame. In the years that followed, Langdale's Essence of Cinnamon grew increasing popular having it's merits fully tested by the members of His Majesty's Civil Service, the Army, Navy, Police, and many large firms.
