UNITY Charity Fashion Show

northwestern.campuslabs.com

UNITY Charity Fashion Show, in its twelfth year running, is an entirely non-profit, student-run organization at Northwestern University, working to provide an outlet both for our students as well as those in the greater Chicago area to showcase their love of fashion, style and creativity as well as support a worthy cause. Members of the UNITY Student Organization at Northwestern University come from diverse backgrounds and represent an array of ethnicities and special interests and bring together many of NU's student organizations to plan the largest fashion event on campus. Each year, during Northwestern's spring quarter, UNITY hosts a large fashion show— fit with student performers, dancers, musicians, and creatives— which benefits a charitable organization in Chicago chosen by our own members. And, for the last two years, UNITY members have chosen SocialWorks. Founded only a few years ago by grammy award winning artist Chance the Rapper, a proud graduate from the Chicago Public School system, Socialworks has since created innumerable programs, one of which called the New Chance School for Art and Literature, as well as many outside events to help their student population foster creativity and positivity in their own communities. Their mission statement simply put is "to empower youth through the arts, education, and civic engagement while fostering leadership, accessibility, and positivity within the youth throughout Chicago." Since its start, Socialworks has raised millions of dollars for the Chicago Public School system, and last year, UNITY contributed around $10,000 to that sum after a year of fundraisers, lemonade stands, and finally, one big fashion show. UNITY's fashion show, typically hosted in May, has featured sponsorships from Bai Juices, Blaze Pizza, Cyclebar and Vans, and always incorporates student fashion designers in the show-- often giving them grants to print their designs or a budget to invent a new clothing line.
