Cumberland County is a county located in South Central Pennsylvania that was formed January 27, 1750 from Lancaster county. Named for Cumberland County in England, it originally extended to Pennsylvania's western limits. Crossed by major roads, the county had a key role in westward migration and continues to be a vital hub for transportation. Currently, the county lies within the Cumberland Valley adjoining to the Susquehanna River at its eastern border. With a population of just over 250,000 people based on the 2017 Pennsylvania State Data Center report, it is the fastest growing county within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The county houses six higher education institutions, eight public libraries, three hospitals, two military operations, and much more. These all fall within one of the 33 local municipalities in the 555 square miles that makes up Cumberland County.
