Next generation sequencing and bioinformatics are revolutionizing public health infectious disease surveillance. Unfortunately, at the state public health level there is a shortage of expertise not only in the utilization of these tools, but in their implementation for real time public health intervention. The barriers in implementation are often rooted in an IT infrastructure that was developed to support business environments, not cutting edge scientific computing environments.
