Artists of the First Sunrise

Documentary and art exhibit giving voice to Indigenous Australians celebrating Dreaming traditions and cultural ceremonies through artistry and performance to heal, teach future generations and non-Indigenous people about their plight. Artists of the First Sunrise features the lives, art, and history of Indigenous Australians keeping Aboriginal cultural traditions alive despite human rights abuses and destruction of traditional ways. Once funded, the full-length documentary will give voice to Indigenous artists who continue to celebrate Dreaming traditions and cultural ceremony through artistry and performance. The 13-minute short, however, is evocative of what the completed documentary will be…highlighting the art, music, dance and performance that the First Nations People create and share to heal through art, teach future generations about traditions and teach others about their plight. A Images are courtesy of professor Wayne Quilliam, one of Australia’s pre-eminent Indigenous photographic artists (http://www.waynequilliam.com). On-line community conversation is invited and welcome. Acknowledgments: Indigenous Australians, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, are the original inhabitants and traditional landowners of Australia. We respectfully acknowledge their country and custodians. Artists of the First Sunrise producers and all associated with the project thank and acknowledge these traditional land owners and all those interviewed/photographed on their respective lands, as well as express our gratitude for their contributions and roles in the development and sharing of cultural stories and images. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this documentary, website, and accompanying materials may contain images or names of people who have since passed away.
