Newly established as a 501c3 in January, 2009, the National Forum on Information Literacy began its advocacy work in 1989 under the aegis of the American Library Association Presidential Committee on Information Literacy. The National Forum on Information Literacy champions information literacy as a lifelong learning strategy to facilitate the development of an informed citizenry that actively participates in a digital society and a global economy. It has since evolved as one of the premier information literacy organizations worldwide. Its mission is to promote information literacy through advocacy, training, and research in collaboration with key stakeholders that includes partnering with diverse constituencies at the local community level. The National Forum focuses its community-based activities primarily in the following areas:  Education and learning  Business and economic interests  Health and wellness  Government and citizenship
