The Safer Tourism Foundation is a new charity set up to improve the health and safety of British tourists. It was born out of the deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning of Bobby and Christi Shepherd, who died whilst on holiday in Corfu in 2006. The children's mother, Sharon Wood, has worked with Thomas Cook to set up the charity, with Thomas Cook providing the initial funding. The Safer Tourism Foundation aims to work in collaboration with a wide range of partners to develop practical solutions to help British tourists to stay safe and well when they are on holiday. We are building an evidence base of the accidents (including fatalities) occurring to British tourists and we are using this to prioritise and evaluate our work. We want to ensure British tourists are as well informed as possible about the safety risks on holiday so that they can make good decisions which keep themselves and their families safe and well. We aim to act as a portal for practical advice and information on all issues to do with health and safety for British tourists.
