Reef Restoration Foundation

www.rrf.org.au

We grow coral fragments in ocean-based nurseries to assist the natural process of recovery after disturbances that are increasing in frequency and severity because of global climate change. We are a grassroots movement, working in partnership with the marine tourism industry and our community, buying time for the places we love while the world moves toward a low carbon future. After securing the first permit for reef restoration on Australia’s World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, we established the first ocean-based coral nursery at Fitzroy Island, near Cairns, on 7 December 2017 following back-to-back mass coral bleaching events. We are resourced by individuals and businesses locally and from across the planet. And our work in the field is supported by volunteers from all compass points of our community. Importantly, our work is underpinned by sound science and is replicable in other communities that wish to help the coral reefs that support our passion, our recreation, our livelihoods, and our economies. We understand that the ocean will continue to warm and that the challenge presents a moving target. It is through identifying the role that we play, collaboration and integration with the burgeoning scientific effort that we will be best placed to adopt and apply emerging techniques and technologies. And to help others to join the movement. Head to our website to learn more or get involved.
