The Nappy Alliance

www.nappyalliance.co.uk

The Nappy Alliance is a coalition of independent providers of reusable nappies which exists to promote the benefits of reusable nappies and greater choice for parents. We believe that the Government should aim to reduce reliance on single-use nappies, and that this can be easily done through the provision of better education and cost-positive financial incentives. The benefits of reusable nappies For the environment and climate change: • Reusable nappies use around 98% fewer raw materials by weight and generate 99% less waste than single-use nappies per child • The average plastic consumption of single-use nappies per child is equivalent to throwing away 17 plastic bags a day, or over 6,000 per year • Single-use nappies are the 25th most common item of marine debris globally found on the seafloor For child health and development: • The age at which children are fully toilet trained is getting later, with many clinicians and educators linking this to increased use of single-use “pull-up” nappies • Concerns have been raised over the presence of carcinogenic chemicals in single-use nappies, leading the French government to call for a restriction on their sale For the economy: • The British reusable nappy industry is world-leading, with several of the biggest international brands generating up to 70 per cent of their revenue from exports • Single-use nappies comprise around 8% of residual waste in England, costing local authorities over £140 million per year for collection & disposal • Families can save over £1,000 by switching to reusable nappies, and more for each additional child
