Bioengineering Department - University of Louisville
www.louisville.eduBioengineering is a relatively new engineering discipline when compared to the long-standing traditions of other fields of engineering. A bioengineer uses traditional engineering skills and tools to analyze and solve problems in biology and medicine. Bioengineers interact with biologists, biochemists, physicians, physiologists, and therapists to design, develop and manufacture instruments, devices, and software, or to develop new procedures to solve clinical problems. The aging of the population and the focus on health issues will increase the demand for better medical devices and equipment designed by bioengineers and the employment opportunities for bioengineers are expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations (27%, source: US Dept of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook) from 2012-22. Combined with a growing job market and financial rewards, bioengineers have the gratification that comes from working to meet the needs of society. Bioengineers choose their field to be of service to people, to be a part of the excitement of working with living systems, and to apply advanced technology to the complex problems of biology and medicine. The areas of emphasis in Bioengineering at Speed School include biomedical devices, bio-Micro/Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems, cellular, tissue and molecular engineering, biomaterials and medical imaging.
