THE STEEL VALLEY PROJECT

The Steel Valley Project is a countryside management project based in Stocksbridge, north of Sheffield, South Yorkshire in the United Kingdom. It operates in the Upper Don Valley but is not confined to this area, as project delivery has included sites in the Peak District National Park, West Barnsley and Denby Dale. This operational area is comprised of rural/urban fringe communities in a landscape that is exceptionally varied and dramatic: Hill top moors and heathlands, crags of millstone grit, farmland with stone walled fields and valley woodlands combine with a heritage of more than 10,000 years of human history. Established in 1988, the Steel Valley Project (SVP) is constituted as a charity limited by guarantee. The SVP is a partnership between Tata Speciality Steels, Bradfield Parish, Stocksbridge Town, and Sheffield City Councils. It also has close links with the South Yorkshire Forest Partnership. These core partners are part of the SVP’s Steering Group which provides support and guidance to deliver the SVP’s strategic plan. For more information, see Meet the Team and Steering Group. The mission statement of the Steel Valley Project is to help people understand, value and care for their local environment to help create healthy and sustainable communities. These objectives are delivered by projects developed and delivered by SVP staff, with the support of volunteer trainees and community groups. A unique approach to countryside management in the UK, the Steel Valley Project has been cited in academic literature, and also as case studies for good practice. It has been also been visited by the European Committee on Science and the Environment when investigating green space management and biodiversity strategies
