Neurologists in the Kaufmann Medical Building remain dedicated and focused on high-quality patient care. Clinical faculty within the department receive multiple referrals requesting sub-specialty care from community neurologists and other clinical department faculty physicians; in the last year, clinical care was provided to more than 65,000 patients. The Department is committed to providing individualized and comprehensive care to each patient. Clinical and research faculty value the role of providing education and support for future physicians and researchers. Medical students, graduate students, residents and postdoctoral student researchers are afforded a supportive and enriched professional environment; in addition to lectures from residents, faculty and professors from various leading institutions, multiple conferences are sponsored through the department’s clinical divisions and research centers. Clinical fellowships focus on Epilepsy, Headache, Neuro-Oncology, Women’s Neurology, Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Neuroendovascular, Clinical Neurophysiology and Movement Disorders. The Department of Neurology is proud to have maintained a steady increase in research funding since the 2017 fiscal year. The department has a strong basic science research program that aims to understand the molecular mechanisms of neurological diseases and develop new strategies to help care for them. Thanks to the significant number of patients in with neurological diseases, clinical research efforts continue to expand. There are two major research centers: the UPMC Stroke Institute and the NIA-funded Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
