Canada - Uganda Canada Sport Medicine (CUSEM)

www.cusem.org

As a spinoff of a pre-existing relationship between CoRSU Rehabilitation Hospital in Uganda, and ReBalance Legacy Society in Victoria BC, CUSEM works to capacity build Sport & Exercise Medicine and improve the health and wellness of both able-bodied and disabled Ugandans. Through yearly excursions to Kampala and Entebbe, Uganda, our group operates on a foundation of education and implementation of current sports medicine practices. Through specific education sessions geared towards physiotherapists, physicians, coaches, and trainers, USM hopes that we can continue to promote a self-sustaining model for growth and development of Uganda's own sports medicine community. Each year, the goal is to build and improve upon the previous visit. This is done by holding progressive education sessions, having follow-up consultations for injured athletes previously seen, and by gathering feedback after each session. A key pillar of our organization is building relationships. We are attempting to bridge the gap between various Ugandan sporting federations and the existing medical organizations to create a harmonious relationship towards a common goal of improved health and wellness not only for elite Ugandan athletes but for all Ugandans. A whole year's worth of planning goes into each trip to ensure the most up-to-date knowledge and skills are passed along. We have recently elected a board of directors to oversee the initiative's yearly plan and implementation. The board also serves as a selection committee to ensure the most top-quality and trusted sports medicine practitioners are providing the care and knowledge.
