The County oversees, staffs and supports many functions which serve residents in both municipal and unincorporated areas including those related to the criminal justice system. The County operates the jail, court security, civil process and maintains warrants, records and permits. Duties of the County are carried out by 13 elected officeholders, 11 judges and six court commissioners. County departments provide numerous services related to planning and zoning, real estate recording, building regulations and highway maintenance. The Greene County Highway Department is responsible for maintaining approximately 8,000 acres of right of way divided into four districts. Within this right of way lies approximately 2,500 lane miles of roadway, 217 bridges, and 655 box culverts.The county also provides a number of consolidated services to citizens with the City of Springfield including a health department, a parks system and an office of emergency management.
