CRAHI-UPC, Centre de Recerca Aplicada en Hidrometeorologia
www.crahi.upc.eduThe CRAHI (Center of Applied Research in Hydrometeorology) focuses its activity on providing scientific and technological support in the area of hydrometeorological management and forecasting, particularly on developing models of the processes that drive the cycle of surface waters. The CRAHI aims to be a pioneer center in hydrometeorological research, enabling it as a leader in technology transfer and in the support of innovation in the companies operating in the sector. It operates within a framework that fosters the creative and innovative spirit of the group's researchers. The CRAHI was founded as a result of an agreement between the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), the Catalonia Department of the Environment and the Catalonian Water Agency. These entities agreed on the need of a hydrometeorological research group in Catalonia. The CRAHI belongs to the UPC Technology Center (CIT-UPC) as a center devoted to applying university research capabilities to innovation in business. As sample of the existing culture of innovation and its fostering of technology transfer, on 2007 the CRAHI started up a spin-off company (HYDS - Hydrometeorological Innovative Solutions) to fill the gap between the conducted research and the existing market. The group's main objectives are: • To develop algorithms and integrated hydrological and meteorological models for the forecasting of hydrological resources. • To develop hydrometeorological decision support systems adaptated to the water cycle management in the Mediterranean region. • To provide analytical, numerical and experimental support to the companies in the water sector. Its aim is to develop and design innovative solutions to new problems related to water, i. e. quantification of water resources, flood risk assessment and prevention, weather forecasting, development of decision-making support systems, quantification of weather impact, etc.). • To train researchers in the design of operational solutions in the field of hydrometeorology. • To become a motor for the development of a culture of innovation among the companies in the hydrologic and meteorological sectors and to become a key reference for technology transfer.
