By coining and pursuing a concept of 'PhotoDiversity', linking the enormous variation in natural light quality to biodiversity as well as the social and cultural diversity necessary to pursue science, The Zoological Lighting Institute is committed to advancing public health, safety and welfare around the globe. Means The Zoological Lighting Institute accomplishes its mission through several means. 1) The Zoological Lighting Institute provides scholarships and other financial support for academic research related to the role of light quality in animal biology and ecology. 2) The Zoological Lighting Institute organizes photobiology into the effects of light upon animal physiology, sensory ecology and ecological activity partitioning. It provides funding in each arena, necessary for ultimate success of wildlife conservation initiatives as well as animal health in aquariums and zoos. 3) The Zoological Lighting Institute pursues public education by publishing, creating social media, as well as delivering and promoting citizen science programs related to the value of natural light in the environment. 4) The Zoological Lighting Institute provides technical support in the form of consultations, for private individuals, zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, and communities seeking to institute ecologically sound lighting projects and/or masterplans.
