Tezhib: Undergraduate Research Journal
www.habib.edu.pkTezhib is Habib University’s first undergraduate academic journal initiated in 2018. It aims to espouse Habib’s values of interdisciplinary knowledge and critical thinking as ideal tools for solving real-world problems. Tezhib believes in the necessity of combining humanities and artistic mediums with the physical science streams to achieve a true understanding of complex phenomena. It welcomes research across and in the areas of namely, postcolonial theory, political economy, comparative politics, literature, arts-informed research, critical design, systems analysis, and more. Habib University students produce numerous, relevant, and diverse research work in their courses, under the supervision of some of the best-qualified faculty. Tezhib is a platform that serves to highlight the potential for change and innovation that these works epitomize. The word ‘تزہیب’ - not to be confused with ‘تہزیب’ (culture) - literally means ‘illumination’ as in, ornamenting a surface with gold. Particularly, it is the technique used to beautify the Quran through etchings of arabesques, rosettes, and palmettes along its page margins. Allegorically, Tezhib signifies the tree, with roots of knowledge as its grounding and its branches climbing towards the Infinite. As an art form, its patterns are based on geometric construction, which in Islamic symbolism represents a basis of ‘Haq’ (the truth) as well as the notion of finiteness alongside infinity. Tezhib Journal stands as an emblem for the confluence of art and science in practice while paying homage to non-Western forms of knowledge
