Development Engineering is UC Berkeley’s graduate training program for students committed to solving complex global challenges across the corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors. Development Engineering integrates engineering, economics, business, natural resource development, and social sciences to develop, implement, and evaluate technological interventions that address the needs of low-income communities around the world. The professional master's program is offered by UC Berkeley’s Graduate Group in Development Engineering, a 30-member faculty coalition who hail from over a dozen schools and departments, including the College of Engineering (ranked third nationally and seventh globally), the Rausser College of Natural Resources (ranked first nationally for environment and ecology studies), the School of Information, the School of Public Health (ranked ninth nationally), the Haas School of Business, (ranked seventh nationally), and the College of Environmental Design, among others. UC Berkeley is ranked first first globally among public universities and fourth-best overall among publics and privates. The master's program fosters “T-shaped” professionals who have a broad base of general skills as well as deep knowledge in one area. The broad skills include the design and management of technology, knowledge of emerging technologies, evidence-based assessment techniques, economic development, and community engagement. The program’s curriculum enables students to further their expertise in one of the following four predefined areas: 1) AI/Data Analytics for Social Impact 2) Energy and Water Systems and the Environment 3) Sustainable Design Innovations 4) Healthcare Transformations
