Not One More Alabama
www.notonemorealabama.orgIn November 2016 a group of family members and professionals joined to collaborate and address the epidemic of substance use disorders and addiction in Alabama. Realizing that incarceration, shame, detachment, and harsh interventions have good intentions but produce poor results, members of Not One More Alabama (NOMA) decided to step forward and share their personal experiences, knowledge, hope and support with those impacted by the disease of addiction. NOMA hopes to change the conversation and lift the stigma of addiction by raising awareness, providing education and becoming a resource for families and our community. There is no scientific evidence that detachment, isolation, and waiting for the “proverbial bottom” is effective, yet we know it hurts almost everyone involved. Instead, we ask that you explore evidence-based theories of compassion and open dialogue. For example, according to the founders of the Center for Motivation and Change, the research evidence is clear: involving family and friends in helping a loved one struggling with substances significantly increases the odds of improvement and helps maintain positive changes. We agree with Johann Hari when he wrote that “The opposite of addiction is not sobriety, but connection.” NOMA is currently working to get Narcan (a form of Naloxone) in the hands of family members who are in close contact with a loved-one with an opioid addiction. Narcan reverses the effects of an overdose and saves lives every day. NOMA has hosted numerous educational and social gatherings including: “The Addicted Brain” presentation; “As Me Anything” Q&A with a panel in long-term recovery; End Heroin Walk; Rock Painting; and monthly Grief Support Group. Our Certified Peer Support team is providing support to families in local hospital emergency rooms and our mobile vehicle “Discovery Room” will soon be appearing at functions throughout the state.
