Salt Collaborative
www.salt1.coOur Vision: Human systems must be based on human values. Humanity thrives on the creation and exchange of value. Our long-term welfare depends upon our collective commitment to managing its true costs and the choices of where that value is directed. We find ourselves trapped in an economic model that culturally celebrates and financially rewards a zero-sum, short-term game. While this model derives legitimacy from the idea of fair market competition, in reality natural and social resources are taken from their rightful owners, both present and future, without paying the true cost. Financialization showers short-term profits on those who socialize long-term costs, and optimizes the system for a relentless consolidation of wealth. This reduces overall value creation, and excludes much of humanity from a life of safety and dignity. We need to refocus the system towards humanity. Then we can thrive in a world where economic success and individual achievement are measured in the ability to create long-term value that reaches as many people as possible. Our Approach: Humanity-centric design. Reimagining these self-reinforcing mechanisms requires transition design that begins with simple local opportunities to embrace the long-term health of the community and set aside this winner-take-all mindset. By seeing past the “lane” that we are in, we can recognize the value and values that all participants in the community bring. It requires approaching the world with empathy and appreciation of our interdependence. Small, local ecosystems that embody collective human values will evolve into sustainable social and economic models based on these values. As these small network nodes develop, they can provide initial guidelines, or at the very small scale, templates, for others to use. As these local ecosystems grow and start interacting and merging, new guiding principles and specific models will emerge, reinforcing the long-term mindset and human values.
